Chandigarh: In a significant political development, senior Congress leader Harpreet Singh Hero, along with hundreds of supporters, joined the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today, delivering a major boost to the party in Punjab’s Zira constituency.
The announcement follows a large rally recently held in Jhabal, where the Azad Group also formally joined SAD. With this move, the Akali Dal appears to be expanding its grassroots presence in the Majha region, particularly in and around Zira.Harpreet Singh Hero is the son of the late Harcharan Singh Hero, a former Congress MLA and prominent figure in the Zira constituency.
His induction marks a notable political crossover from a strong Congress family background to SAD.
The development was officially shared by the Shiromani Akali Dal on social media, where the party declared that this move, following earlier successes in Tarn Taran, marks a significant gain for SAD in Zira.
SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal personally welcomed Hero into the party and appointed him as the Halqa Incharge (constituency in-charge) for Zira. The event witnessed a large gathering, which party leaders hailed as a reflection of SAD’s growing momentum across Punjab.
The occasion was attended by senior leaders including former Cabinet Minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon, Joginder Singh Jindu (District President, Ferozepur), and members of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), along with other key local party workers.
