Chandigarh: Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira, while participating in the discussion on the Punjab Prevention of Offences against Holy Scripture(s) Bill, 2025, expressed doubts over the Bill’s future, asserting that it is unlikely to receive the President of India’s approval.
Khaira said, “Mark my words – this Bill will not be approved. It is similar to the one brought by Captain Amarinder Singh’s government during the Congress regime, which has still not received the President’s assent.”
He pointed out that the earlier Bill got stalled because it overrode certain provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).He further argued that the current Bill too faces the same fate as it now clashes with the provisions of the newly introduced Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Khaira’s remarks add to the ongoing political and legal debate over the controversial Bill, which proposes life imprisonment for sacrilege but is being questioned for its constitutional and legal sustainability.
