Chandigarh:– In a significant development, the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Monday passed a resolution to refer the Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scripture(s) Bill, 2025 to a Select Committee for detailed examination, with a focus on seeking public and institutional feedback.

The decision, which underscores the government’s commitment to inclusive and consultative law-making, was announced by Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan, who will also oversee the formation of the Select Committee.

The Committee has been tasked with conducting extensive consultations with religious organizations and the general public, ensuring that diverse viewpoints are incorporated.

A six-month deadline has been set for the submission of the final report, which will include recommendations based on the inputs received during the consultation phase.

Officials stated that the move is aimed at crafting legislation that is balanced, sensitive to religious sentiments, and reflective of public opinion, especially given the deeply emotional and complex nature of sacrilege-related issues in Punjab.

By opening the Bill to wider scrutiny and dialogue, the Punjab government seeks to build a more transparent and participatory legal process, fostering greater trust among communities and stakeholders.
