NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will on Thursday inaugurate the first two-day national level conference of chairpersons of urban local bodies of states and union territories at the International Centre for Automotive Technology in Gurugram, Haryana.

The conference aims to serve as an important platform to underline the important role of urban local bodies in a rapidly urbanizing India. It aims to strengthen democratic institutions, share best practices and explore and highlight innovative approaches to urban governance in the contemporary era.

The theme of the conference is: “Role of Urban Local Bodies in Strengthening Constitutional Democracy and Nation Building”. During the conference, the delegates will deliberate on important issues including: Empowering urban local bodies as the fundamental pillar of democracy by developing model practices and procedures and code of conduct for general council meetings; Empowering urban local bodies as engines of inclusive growth by making municipal governance more effective in fulfilling the constitutional mandate; Empowering urban local bodies as architects of 21st century India by helping achieve the goal of developed India by 2047; Empowering urban local bodies as an instrument of women empowerment.

The proceedings will begin on Friday with presentations by five groups on their respective sub-themes. The closing session will be attended by Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, who will address the gathering. Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, Haryana Speaker Kalyan and other dignitaries will be present. A show round of Prerna Sthal, Samvidhan Sadan and Sansad Bhavan will also be organised on the concluding day of the conference, the official statement said. (Inputs-IANS)
