5 killed, 2 missing as car falls into Bhakra canal in Punjab's Ropar

Ropar: Five people, including two women, have died while two children are feared washed away after a Hyundai Creta car fell into the Bhakra canal, near here, on Monday. The car, registered in Rajasthan, was coming from the Kiratpur Sahib side when it was hit by a private bus. According to DSP Varinder Pal Singh, it was at around 10.30 am that the car fell into the canal after being hit by a private bus from behind near Ahmedpur village on the Kiratpur Sahib-Ropar road.

As passersby raised an alarm, the search for victims and the car was initiated with the help of divers. The car was lifted out of the canal using a crane and the bodies of three men and two women were recovered.
The DSP said the relatives of the deceased said two children were accompanying the deceased. The search for them was on, the DSP said.
